Our roulette date wheel elegantly weaves Mahjong’s rich cultural symbolism into daily timekeeping. The numeral '1' is replaced by the 1-Bamboo 'Bird'—the suit's highly expressive first tile, which historically evolved from a decorative string of coins.
For the 8th, we feature the Green Dragon (發 - Fat), signifying prosperity. This is a deliberate nod to Chinese culture, where the number eight sounds strikingly similar to 'Fat' (wealth), granting the wearer a monthly touch of good fortune.
The Mahjong 36 is equipped with a highly practical Chinese calendar complication, inspired by the concept of a traditional complete calendar but reinterpreted to reflect the Chinese system of timekeeping.
Hidden within is an Easter egg: the first lunar month (Zhengyue) deliberately corresponds to the Gregorian January. This subtle displacement nods to the historical shifts of the Chinese New Year, embodying the philosophy that change is the only constant.
Like traditional complete (also known as full or triple) calendar watches, the calendar mechanism assumes that every month has 31 days. As a result, on the 31st at midnight, the date automatically advances to the 1st of the following month. The month can be adjusted using the small pusher at 2 o’clock, while the crown is used to set the date, the day of the week, and the time.
Embracing the thrilling unpredictability of a Mahjong game, the caseback hides a secret: one of the three iconic 'Dragon' tiles is randomly engraved on each watch.
You might draw Chung (中), symbolizing success and hitting your mark; Fat (發), bringing the promise of wealth and prosperity; or Pak (白), representing a pure, clean slate.
This randomized element transforms the timepiece into a personalized lucky charm, perfectly capturing the game's inherent spirit of chance.
The dial is definitely one of the highlights of the Brooklyn 36. We spent lots of time finding the right balance between design and legibility to house the full triple calendar complication.
The dial is inspired by the 60’s Pie-Pan dials which have a recessed chapter ring giving the dial a lot of depth. The subdials are also lowered which results in a beautiful contrasting surface. To put more emphasis on these contrasts we have chosen to give the dial a sunburst finish combined with a sandblasted chapter ring and subdials.
